Mirror writing

MO called up today to express her concern about her 4 year old son mirror image writing.

Example of mirror image writing are letter 'b' is written as 'd' or '9' is written as 'P'.

It ususally appears on a child's writing at about 4 years old.

She wondered whether it is due to the physical development at his infant age.

Because his physical movement was restricted in a playpen under the baby sitter's care.

That has triggered me to do a search on the internet.

Surprisingly, it reveals much more facts about the mirror image writing.

Leonardo da Vinci is one of the notable example for having written most of his personal notes in mirror images.

I came across cases of mirror image writing when I was working in kindergaten. One of the parent show her concern about mirror image writing in her 5 year old daughter.

Later, she came back to me and told me that she was writing in mirror image when she was young too. And this is coincided with my search results that mirror image writing is probably caused by inherited.

Below is the search from Wikipedia

Mirror writing is formed by writing in the direction that is the reverse of the natural way for a given language, such that the result is the mirror image of normal writing: it appears normal when it is reflected in a mirror. It is sometimes used as an extremely primitive form of cipher. The most common modern usage of mirror writing can be found on the front of ambulances, where the word "AMBULANCE" is often written in very large mirrored text, so that drivers see the word the right way around in their rear-view mirror—and understand why they hear a loud siren behind them.

Research suggests that the ability to do mirror writing is probably inherited and caused by atypical language organisation in the brain. It is not known how many people in the population inherited the ability of mirror writing (an Australian researcher estimates the proportion to be 1 in 6500). Half of the children of people with the ability inherited it. There are more left-handed mirror writers than right-handed ones, probably because left-handed people tend to have atypical language centres in their brain.
